Parent and Student Role Policy
Parents and guardians have a supporting role under the direction of the teacher. The role of the parent or guardian is to support the teacher in implementing the education plan for the learner.
The role of parents should be to:

Have primary responsibility for the child’s well-being, growth, and development.

Recognize that teachers have professional training and expertise.

Inform the teacher of resources and services successfully used in the past and/or preferred for the present.

Collaborate with the teacher to develop the Student Learning Plan (SLP) by providing the teacher with insight into the child’s passions, interests, learning styles and work habits, and the family’s goals for the education process so that the SLPs can be individualized.

Approve the SLP.

Fulfill the role of teacher’s aide in implementing the SLP.

Communicate weekly with the teacher and engage in an ongoing discussion about the progress and needs of the learner.

Maintain records of daily student achievement and make work samples available to the teacher.

Ensure students in Grades four and seven have time and opportunity to complete the Foundation Skills Assessment.

Report field trips, events and spontaneous learning opportunities to the teacher so that the SLP may be kept current.

Help monitor and support students in online courses, including building schedules, following up on work submitted and communicating with the teacher where needed.

Assist the teacher with making initial contact with proposed service providers.
Students should be increasingly ready to take responsibility for their learning by:

Collaborating with their teacher(s) and their parents to help develop the SLP by providing the teacher with insight into their passions, interests, learning styles and work habits, as well as their goals. Informing the teacher of resources and services successfully used in the past and/or preferred for the present.

Reflecting on their learning and communicating weekly with their teacher to discuss progress and needs.

Maintaining records of daily achievement and making work samples available to the teacher.

Reporting field trips, events and spontaneous learning opportunities to their teacher so that the SLP may be kept current.

Reflecting on their learning and communicating as needed with their online course teachers to discuss progress, needs and ask for support.
