Canadian Reader and What in the World?
The Canadian Reader magazine (Grades 3-5)
The Canadian Reader (Grades 3-5) explores Canadian events, issues, and geography while building informational reading skills.
The magazine is published eight times a year from September to May. Each issue includes:
- Focus on key reading strategies: connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, and synthesizing
- Three student-friendly news articles
- Ready-to-use literacy lesson plans, graphic organizers, and assessments
- Canadian geography map activity linked to an article
- Non-fiction comic with related lesson plan and support materials
What in the World? magazine (Grades 5-10)
What in the World? is a current events resource for students in Grades 5–10 that helps build understanding of important Canadian and international news and events. The magazine is published eight times each school year, from September to May, and is available in two reading levels:
- Level 1: Grades 5–7
- Level 2: Grades 8–10
Each issue includes:

Relevant background information to enhance understanding of each event or issue

On-the-line, between-the-line, and beyond-the-line questions

Assignment to analyze a political cartoon and examine a news photo

Magazine Formats
Magazines are available in two formats: .pdf and .docx.
- The .pdf file contains the complete document and cannot be changed. It has helpful information for parents and answer keys at the bottom of the document.
- The .docx file contains only the articles and questions. Students can complete assignments directly in the .docx document using Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
