World Book (K -K-Grade 12) is the leading online encyclopedia. The website is accessed through Focused Education Resources and the BC Digital Classroom.

ThisFocused SubscriptionEducation Resources is a not-for-profit, shared services organization that supports excellence in K-12 education in British Columbia. It is a consortium of BC public school districts and independent schools that work together to create accessible learning resources for BC schools. Within Focused Education Resources is the BC Digital Classroom, which houses many of the subscriptions available to Enrolled, Flex,HCOS and RegisteredFlex students.families.

Early Learning (K -K-Grade 3)

Early Learning supports early elementary students with “Trek’s Travels,” “Welcome to Reading,” and “Know It.” These sites include narrative stories, interactive games, and a visual interactive encyclopedia to support early reading, numeracy, and knowledge.  Pre-readers will enjoy listening to stories.  Readers can control the story's pace of the story as word-by-word highlighting guides them along the way. them. They can also play games and enjoy sorting, painting, and matching puzzles.  Print-and-go activities will also interest your primary-aged students.

World Book Kids (K -K-Grade 5)

World Book Kids is an online encyclopedia designed for a younger primary elementary audience with easy-to-read articles, thousands of illustrations, and engaging activities. Students Sciencecan enjoy science projects, experiments, biographical searches, animal comparisons, and mapping searches, including World Book Maps with printable PDF maps. (comparison maps of provinces and places, etc).  Games and activities.

World Book Student (Gr.Grades 5 - 5-8)

World Book Student gives elementary and middle school students access to 40,000 encyclopedia and reference articles, 10,000 biographies, plus audio, videos, animations, historical features, educational tools, and activities.  Students will learn about research skills needed to complete research projects, including the researchplanning project,process, planningevaluating sources, and creating citations.  Steps are foundational and include the evaluation of sources like wikis, podcasts, etc.  Students will also learn how to use MyResearch, wherewhich studentsallows canthem to save all their research processes. research. World Book Discover (Gr.Grades 3 - 3-9)

World Book alsoDiscover includes “World Book Discover” (introduction video),is a collection of resources for differentiated learning, including read-aloud, text translation, video, and clear, easy-to-read information. This engaging 21st-century resource supports students workingwho belowneed gradeadditional levelsupport with research articles, research tools, and multimedia and interactive videos designed to support grade-level content. Reluctant readers and students with mild learning disabilities will appreciate this support.  Students can listen to content in many languages.  Students are able to create individual accounts to save their research and easily access the citations.videos. World Book Advanced (GradeGrades 9+)9-12)

World Book Advanced gives students access to refined optimized searching of World Book’s encyclopedia,encyclopedias, multimedia, eBooks (including Shakespeare and Dickens, library, and other classics), and primary source databases. It also includes research tools such as dictionaries, atlas, and research guides with bibliographical citation builders for bibliographies. builders. Students have the ability to create individual accounts, save their content, bothcreate within World Booktimelines, and from external sources, and create timelines anddevelop citations in MLA format.  Primary and secondary sources are covered in all databases. The Pathfinders willfeature helphelps students research popular topics,topics and links to media, biographies, government, and history.

World Book Timelines (K -K-Grade 12)

World Book Timelines is optimized for tablets and offers hundreds of pre-generated timelines across eight broad topics, which cover various time periods in history or span the life of historical public figures.  Featuring more personalization and customization options than any other World Book site, World Book Timelines also allows users to create their own timeline from scratch, adding events, descriptions, and media. World Book Timelines is now found listed within each of the other World Book sites.

L’Encyclopédie Découverte (Gr.Grades 8 - 8-12)

L'Encyclopédie Découverte offers students a colourful engagement in the French language,language. coveringCategories include: People, Exploring the World, Science and Math, Religions of the World, Plants and Animals, History, Arts and Literature, and Sports and Hobbies. Each of these categories opens up other topics. Rich with images,images aand visual dictionary,engaging activities, and other links,L'Encyclopédie Découverte will givegives students added value and experience alongside their French language studies. Suitable for upper Middle and High School students. This site is for students who are already fluent in French and is not meant to be a language-learning site.resource.

Logging In

LogThere are two steps to log in to WorldBook.


Step 1Navigate to theBC SearchDigital PortalClassroom using your Encom username and password. Choose the Subs/Passwords tab,, then scroll down the list and select the Worldicon Book link nearfor the bottom.

Choose the World Book productresource you wish to access:access.



Step 2: Enter the username and password foundfor WorldBook from the Subs/Passwords tab in the Search Portal.Portal.

You can easily switch from one site in World Book to another, just by choosing “Your Resources” in the lower-left corner of the page that you are viewing.

Saving Your Research

World Book allows students to set up their own “My Research” page for saving their workwork. from World Book sites, and allows saving from other sites, as well. Go toClick the hamburger menu (three lineslines) at the top right ofcorner theto page. (As seen in World Book Student)access.


ChooseNext, select “My Research” from the navigation options. E.g. from the Advanced Search Page

Finally,

Chooseselect “Create an Account” to set up your folder with your username and password.


WhenUsers youcan arenow lookingsave ata anWorldBook article into Worldtheir Book,"My youResearch" canpage chooseby selecting the Tools"Tools" setting in the upper right-handright corner of the article if you want to save it.article.

This will give you the option to save the article to your “My Research” folder, to share it, to print it, to translate the article into another language, to hear it, to change the size of the text, or to cite it (citations available are in MLA, APA and Harvard format).
